James Reaper, Sport and Leisure’s Leisure Supervisor (Fitness) has been shortlisted for the BUCS Unsung Hero award.

BUCS - the national governing body for higher educational sport and active wellbeing - celebrate best practise across the sector each year.

There are a number of awards up for grabs and City St George’s has been shortlisted for the first time. James Reaper, Sport and Leisure’s Leisure Supervisor (Fitness) has been shortlisted for the BUCS Unsung Hero award.

The unsung hero is awarded to an individual who provides commitment and dedication to ensure the hard work behind the scenes is completed to provide an exceptional experience for our students. Winners usually go above and beyond their official remit to ensure a positive experience. They also do so with expecting recognition.

This criteria could not better represent James.

“James has created a hugely successfully programme that doubled student engagement from the previous year, but it’s the work outside his remit that deserves celebration. He’s brought in health projects, introduced satellite activity sessions, provided new opportunities for club members, and delivered performance provision.” said, Tom Edwards, Head of Sport and Leisure.

Upon being shortlisted, James commented: “I was genuinely surprised and very humbled to be nominated.

“This award recognises those who work behind the scenes to support student sport, and to even be shortlisted in this category is an honour I wasn’t expecting.

“I'm only a small part of the wider team at City St George’s, all working together to deliver the best service we can. The support and commitment from the Sport and Leisure team has made this one of the most fulfilling and successful years I’ve had.”

James will be celebrated during a black-tie event for all staff nationally who work on higher educational sport and physical activity. The Awards ceremony will close BUCS’ annual conference 15-18th July.

We wish him the best of luck!
